Is the 'True Self' a useful concept??

Is therapy really about 'actualising our true self?' as the humanistic tradition asserts? The concept of a true self would, in fact, invalidate therapy: it would imply the existence of a fixed (albeit hidden) thing which, while it might be 'brought out' is ultimately unable to change. Better to view ourselves as 'processes in transition' with no 'thing-hood'. This is a more Buddhist view: a 'no-self' which offers infinite possibility of change... what an optimistic view of humanity!
