Cruelty

Cruelty is always possible — and always tempting — because it promises certainty, control, and relief from anxiety. Love is harder. It refuses certainty. Love moves in the direction of the minimal conditions for a human universe, while cruelty moves against them, toward collapse into force and objectification.

This is not a picture of a moral universe. It names a fundamental ethics — one that philosophy and psychotherapy share.
